Establishing the fundamentals of bite work with the young male Doberman, Ares. Cultivating his grips and swift ‘outs’ without conflict.
The most effective approach to teaching a rapid ‘out’ is to frequently let the dog re-engage, helping them understand that releasing the item is a seamless part of the game, not the conclusion of it.
Having a reactive dog presents constant challenges, causing stress for both the owner and the dog and often diminishing the joy of taking the dog out.
Clients we assist often grapple with a challenging cycle where the dog becomes conditioned to react negatively upon encountering other dogs. Alternatively, some owners attempt to avoid such encounters altogether, a difficult feat in public spaces and a source of significant stress. Unfortunately, dogs pick up on their owners’ stress and anxiety, perpetuating the cycle of reactivity.
Working with reactive dogs primarily involves breaking undesirable habits and establishing alternative behaviors by fostering positive habits and better choices.
When we commenced working with Toby, our focus was on identifying his motivations. Discovering his love for the ball, we initiated engagement techniques with his owners. Currently, we’re providing him with improved alternatives, encouraging better habits. Toby is now learning not to fixate on other dogs and react but to concentrate and have more enjoyable interactions with his owners.
The notable progress is evident as Toby can now be around other dogs without displaying reactive behavior—an achievement worth celebrating. Kudos to these owners for their dedicated efforts, striving to provide a better life for their dog.
