Bored Dogs = Bad Dogs

Summer Brain Games for Active Minds

When summer hits, our routines shift. Kids are off school, holidays disrupt the usual walk schedules, and the long hot days can leave even the most energetic dog lounging around. But while a sun-soaked snooze might be welcome, boredom in dogs can quickly lead to unwanted behaviours, from chewing shoes to digging up the garden.

At Frontier K9 Services, we believe a tired dog is a happy dog, but mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. This summer, keep your canine’s brain buzzing with some simple but effective brain games designed to challenge and engage.

1. The “Find It” Game

This classic never gets old. Simply hide treats around the house or garden and let your dog sniff them out. Start easy, then increase the challenge.

Why it works: Dogs are natural foragers. Using their nose exercises both brain and body and builds problem-solving confidence.

2. Muffin Tin Madness

Take a muffin tray, place treats in some of the cups, then cover all cups with tennis balls. Your dog will need to use their nose and paws to uncover the rewards.

Top tip: Start with only a few covered treats and increase difficulty as your dog gets the hang of it.

3. “Which Hand?” Game

Hide a treat in one hand, close both fists, and present them to your dog. Let them sniff and paw to guess where the treat is.

Why it’s great: Quick, free, and perfect for rainy days or lazy summer afternoons.

4. DIY Puzzle Toys

Stuff a Kong or a cardboard box with treats and shredded paper. Let your dog work to get the food out.

Enrichment tip: Freeze peanut butter or yoghurt in a Kong for a cooling challenge on hot days.

5. Scent Trails in the Garden

Lay a trail of treats or use a favourite toy with a scent trail around the garden. Make it more complex as your dog progresses.

Added bonus: This mimics tracking work and is ideal for dogs with working drives, perfect for the kinds of dogs we specialise in at Frontier K9.

Why Mental Exercise Matters

Mental stimulation reduces stress, anxiety, and destructive behaviours. Just 10–15 minutes of brain work can be as tiring as a long walk and it’s safer in the heat.

For working breeds or high-energy dogs, brain games are essential. Without proper outlets, boredom can lead to behaviours that frustrate owners and confuse dogs. The good news? These behaviours are preventable with the right structure and activities.
