Bonfire Night can be a spectacular occasion filled with vibrant fireworks and glowing bonfires, but it can also be a stressful time for our furry friends. Many animals find fireworks scary, leading to responses that can range from freezing in fear to bolting, rearing up, or charging fences. At Frontier K9 Services, we believe in prioritising the well-being of our dogs during these festivities. Over the last three years (2021-2023), we received over 13,000 responses to our impact reporting survey, detailing the fear responses demonstrated by animals and their owners’ experiences. Here are some tips to ensure your canine companion enjoys a safe and pleasant Bonfire Night.
1. Create a Safe Space at Home
To help your dog feel secure, create a cosy, quiet space for them in your home. Choose one of the quietest rooms where they can feel in control. Train your dog to associate this area with positive experiences by leaving their favourite toys there. Use a variety of chew toys and swap them regularly to keep things interesting. This way, when fireworks start, your dog will know this place is safe and enjoyable.
2. Use Calming Aids
Consider using calming products such as anxiety wraps, pheromone diffusers, or calming sprays. These can create a comforting environment for your pet. Consult with your vet to determine the best options for your dog.
3. Keep Them Indoors
During Bonfire Night, it’s crucial to keep your dog indoors, especially during peak firework times. Move them to their safe haven before the fireworks begin, ensuring that windows and doors are securely closed to prevent escape. This is also a great time to have a fun indoor play session with toys or treats to distract them.
4. Plan Ahead Before Firework Season
Preparing your dog in advance can help them cope with the noise. Ensure they have access to their safe haven at all times, even when you’re not home. This area should be their retreat during stressful times.
5. Calm Your Pet with Music
Playing relaxing music is one of the most common measures pet owners take to help their animals during fireworks. Classic FM’s Pet Classics is a fantastic way to soothe your dog. Tune in to special broadcasts, such as with Dan Walker on November 2nd and Charlotte Hawkins on November 5th, from 5 to 9 PM – Click Here
6. Walk Your Dog Before Dark
Take your dog for a walk during daylight hours to avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off. This not only helps them expend energy but also ensures they are settled at home before the noise begins.
7. During the Fireworks
- Close windows and curtains to muffle the sounds and block out flashes of light.
- Provide toys and comfort items in their safe haven to keep them occupied.
- Play with toys to encourage your dog to join in, but don’t force them to play.
- Ignore the firework noises yourself, as your dog will pick up on your anxiety.
If your dog shows significant anxiety, consider discussing pheromone diffusers with your vet, or they may even prescribe medication if needed.
8. Consult Your Vet
If you know your dog has severe anxiety during fireworks or has had distressing experiences in the past, consult with your veterinarian for tailored strategies or medications.

Bonfire Night can be a magical time, but it’s important to remember that our dogs may not share our excitement.
