Back to School, Back to Routine – Helping Your Dog Adjust

Well, summer is almost over for another year. And September often marks a big shift in the household. The long summer days filled with family time, spontaneous walks, and extra play sessions give way to school runs, homework, and busy work schedules. While we humans adapt fairly quickly to this change, our dogs can sometimes struggle with the sudden shift in routine.

Why the Change Matters
Dogs thrive on consistency. During the summer, they may have enjoyed more company, more activity, and more attention. When the household suddenly becomes quieter during the day, some dogs can experience boredom, anxiety, or even separation-related behaviours.

Signs Your Dog May Be Struggling

  • Increased barking, whining, or destructive chewing

  • Pacing or restlessness

  • Changes in appetite or sleeping patterns

  • Overly excited greetings when you return home

Tips for a Smooth Transition

Ease Back Into the Routine
If you can, begin adjusting walk and feeding times to your “term-time” schedule a week or two before school starts. This gradual change helps your dog adapt without a sudden shock to their day.

Engage Their Mind
Interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and safe chews can keep your dog mentally occupied while you’re out. A stimulated mind often means a calmer, happier dog.

Make Time for Connection
Even with busy school and work days, carve out dedicated one-on-one time, whether it’s a walk, a short training session, or simply a cosy cuddle.

Think About Extra Support
If your dog will be alone for long stretches, consider occasional visits from a professional dog walker or some time at a trusted dog day care. It’s a great way to break up their day and keep them content.

Stay Consistent with Training
Regularly reinforce good manners and commands. Consistency builds your dog’s confidence and helps them know what’s expected, even when life gets busier.

Remember: Your dog doesn’t understand the school calendar, but they do understand how much they enjoy being with you. By taking a few proactive steps, you can make “back to school” a smooth and stress-free transition for both of you.
